Our Unified Job Description

"The job of the APS Board of Education is to accelerate learning for every APS student, every day. We do our job by advocating for the success of all students through effective governance, serving as good stewards of taxpayer dollars and being responsive to our stakeholders. Our community needs us to do our job."

What is the Aurora Public Schools Board of Education?

The APS Board of Education is a group of citizens elected by voters to provide leadership and establish policies for the school district.

The seven-member board is elected at-large. Members serve four-year terms and receive no monetary compensation.

The board follows a policy governance model.

What is Policy Governance?

In June 2009, the APS Board of Education adopted a policy governance model, which guides the board's governance process, board-superintendent relationship, executive limitations and district goals.

What is the format of Board meetings?

Board meetings are generally held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 6 p.m. The board first meets at 5:30 p.m. for dinner.  The board meetings will follow one of these formats: General Business Meeting, Board Work Session, Board Workshop.

Regular Business meetings are generally held at the Dr. Ed Lord and Patricia Lord Board Room, Educational Services Center - Peoria Building, 1085 Peoria St. These meetings are open to the public.

Board Work Sessions and Workshops are generally held in the Mt. Massive Conference Room of the APS Professional Learning and Conference Center, 15771 E. 1st Ave.

Board Executive Sessions will take place at times and locations as announced on the APS website, APS Web Calendar and BOE Web Calendar.

How do Meeting Agendas and Minutes Work?

At each meeting, informational reports will be presented by the Board, Superintendent or district leadership.

The Board will hold a workshop on the second meeting of the month to review topics more thoroughly or engage and gather input from district or community groups.

The minutes of each Board meeting are first posted to the BOE Web site as draft minutes until they are approved by the Board. They are then reposted to the Web site as the official Board minutes.
